From One Dog to Another

Hello, Odysseus. Tobey here. I’d hoped you wouldn’t continue barking up the wrong tree but that truly seems to be your modus operandi

As I said — and as the mewling mob graciously demonstrated — this is not a debatable proposition. People made a dumb mistake, and, in preference to admitting the obvious, they made asses of themselves. A surprise to no one.

This is but one of the many “do as I say, not as I do” statements in your latest rant.

The merit of this video or of other topics for that matter is a debatable proposition for those who choose to debate rather than simply dismiss anyone who does not share your particular view on life, real estate and the world.

Shall we review the non-debatable propositions we have seen:

  • Dual agency – evil, incarnate, no debate allowed. Of course, no less than Russell Shaw thinks your theory is a joke but why give weight to the opinion of someone who has sold scores of home this year when we can listen to you?
  • Divorced commissions – must happen, no debate allowed. Again, many weighed in on the opposite side of the debate. Your response again was to dismiss their opinions as unsupportable even as support was provided.
  • The “price your home correctly” video non issue. Well …

You claim to speak to the masses, to the struggling or the wannabe bloggers but yours is a terrible example for those masses. Throw away the fact you intentionally write over the heads of most. Throw away the fact you claim outright not to attempt to generate any (real estate) business from your blog. Throw away the fact that there now is a full pack of authors providing opinions and viewpoints well beyond your own – the very opinions and viewpoints that drive the bulk of your traffic these days, since most people can search YouTube for their own musical selections.

Few could accomplish what you have. Fewer still even should try.

For all the discussions I’ve had with other non-blogging agents about blogging, I’ve never told them – look at me, learn from me and I’ll show you the way. Because there is no one way of doing anything. If I choose to post a certain video because it conveys a message in a different way, I’ll do so. Chiding me later for the act shows only your own arrogance.

Maybe the problem is you’ve been so far removed from the actual work of real estate in the interest of building Odysseus Blog Consulting that you’ve lost sight of what actually is happening on the ground. I don’t know. And maybe it’s my boss’ background in journalism, particularly sportswriting, that has kept me mindful of the maxim that it’s dangerous to believe too heavily in your own press clippings.

You and I come from the same hunting breed, Odysseus. One look tells you what we have in common but there’s much that separates us. For instance, two summer knee surgeries have made me painfully aware that I was given rather short legs. Shorter than yours, actually. So be it.

The difference between you and I is I’ve learned not to overreach, both to avoid injury and to avoid what seems to keep happening to you – you bay too loudly, reach too far and end up pissing all over yourself instead of your target.

I saw the video — thought it was brilliant — headed over to BHB — quickly composed a telling title — wrote a FOUR word totally linked ‘post’.

    Wow!

What always surprises me, much to my wife’s amusement, is how so many put forth their view on any particular subject matter as if they’re Einstein explaining gravity to a six year old. And if the child shows the least crack in the wall of complete adherence to the wise teacher, he has provided empirical evidence of at least mild retardation.

I’m always not only willing but more than eager to learn, especially when it comes to my vocation.

Answering questions, whether asked directly, or implied, should be in depth, with as much rational thought and (here’s that word again) empirical evidence if possible.

I’ve been challenged countless times, often face to face in my own office. Since I know what I’m doing, and understand the principles and concepts on which my investment philosophy is based, I can provide an uncommonly detailed answer to just about any question posed.

Invariably, my answer more than satisfies the questioner, or at least allows them to fully understand the subject from a different viewpoint.

Something my Grandpa told me almost over 40 years ago has stayed with me. He said, “Nobody wants to know HOW the cat was skinned until they find out IF the cat was skinned.”

Applied to this whole video dustup, nobody has a clue whether or not Daniel’s video will in any way become a direct or indirect source of business. Yet so many will never know because they’re too busy explaining to the uneducated/ignorant masses why it won’t skin the cat.

    Bravo!

The wretch, concentred [sic] all in self,
    Living, shall forfeit fair renown,
And, doubly dying, shall go down
To the vile dust, from whence he sprung,
    Unwept, unhonoured, and unsung

    Thanks Jonathon. Well summed up

Greg is lucky that he has some GREAT blogging colleagues over at BHB otherwise it would be the nicest designed RE blog that no one reads.

Of course in later comments we learn that all of our responses are “swill.” Apparently there wasn’t a Latin phrase handy.

Ben – I disagree if only because the other dog’s biggest strength is the ability to grandstand to drive traffic. You’re average wacky FM DJ could learn a few lessons.

If I’d wanted to increase my own traffic on my own blog I could have posted my objections there. But this seemed the better forum because, though from what we’ve discussed Lani and Benn don’t see it this way, AG operates as the anti-BHB.

This has nothing to do with the contributors, which are quality in both locales. But the blatant hypocrisy of the other side – promote the purity of the conversation so long as it promotes the personal quest for notoriety – is just too much.

Be wary of taking advice from a man who feels compelled to tell you how smart he is.

Ironically, my father’s favorite latin phrase, and the only Latin phrase I throw around, is “de gustibus non est disputandum” which translates loosely to ‘Matters of Taste are not to be disputed’

Maybe Greg doesn’t remember this quote, or missed it in latin 101; It’s a good one to remember.

This post is why you are one of my favorite bloggers Jonathan. You’ve said everything I have been thinking since this thing started.

I rediscovered a neat feature of the bhb yesterday. I can subscribe to individual contributors instead of the whole thing. The unsubscribe feature on my Google reader is absolutely priceless.

    Thanks again Jonathan!

Of course in later comments we learn that all of our responses are “swill.”

He took it further than that. In the same quote:

I don’t read the swill that people spew when they get the idea that their anger proves something, but the general proposition is funny to me: “We’ll show him what happens to someone who takes a firm moral stand against an irrational mob!”

I responded to that on BHB, but my comment was not approved.

I asked if what he calls “a firm moral stand” infers that he stood up to something “immoral”. If so, then it has now gone from merely insulting to immoral.

I also asked if it occurred to him that his twist on a Biblical reference, where he states he would look after his flock differently than God would, was likely to have insulted more people than a simple video that cut to the chase about all that matters in this market – price.

BloodhoundBlog is written to be controversial, and — as this post and many others make plain — we don’t — and should not — care whose toes we might step on.

    Unless those toes are Greg’s.

Chuchundra – Jeff Brown summed that up in a comment once about Teresa Boardman, along the lines of she doesn’t need to tell you she can sing, read her blog and you hear the song.

Charles – much appreciated on all counts. I do recall when they added individual feeds but I have not taken advantage of it, mostly because it’s in my backyard and it helps to know what’s said.

Bob – you summed it up.
