It’s time…
It’s time for President Obama to step up and give our troops in Afghanistan the tools they need to win. There’s political ramifications to everything Mr. President but all Americans really want is for their sons and daughters to have every tool at their disposal to be successful against the Taliban. How long are you going to wait to make a decision on more troops?
Then there’s Jimmy Carter. Every time he opens his mouth I’m harkened back to the days of Billy Beer, 18% interest rates and former President Carter lusting for other women in his heart in Playboy magazine. Too bad it’s all still as embarrassing as it was in the late 70’s. Anyone still wonder why the peanut man got bounced in the 1980 election? If he only realized every time he opens his mouth he makes Barack Obama’s job harder.

Greg- I wasn’t alive during Carter, so my perspective is one of historical retrospection, but mostly, my impression of Carter is from the episode of the Simpsons where he was a complete tool. If Carter were a standard civilian, he would already have been dismissed as the rambling old guy.
Regarding Afghanistan, I’m watching Meet The Press right now and they’re already saying that Obama doesn’t have to listen to his GuyOnTheGround that he sent to make recommendations… why would you send him then? Why bother?
For that matter, where the hell are our allies that pledged in what, 2001/2002 to rebuild Afghanistan? Why are we the only ones with boots on the ground? We will inevitably have to ramp up our numbers there, that is clear, but can’t we make a few phone calls before we dismiss or accept any recommendations?

Fred….if it’s not your thing, we’ll miss your input. I think this is a great opportunity to engage on a higher level. Please remember this is not a 7 day a week exercise….it’s being put on Sundays only. Yes, it’s always a challenge to introduce new ways of doing things but I’d like to believe the Real Estate community actually is broad enough to discuss things like the political climate on Sundays. Many times I will try and draw the topic back to real estate but some weeks like the one just passed offer opportunities to interact on more specific issues. I hope you’ll consider giving us a chance….

Jimmy Carter remains a nice guy who has no place in politics. He was a weak military leader who led us into and quagmired in the Iran hostage crisis. He had no concept of a balanced budget which led to outrageous interest rates. He simply could not shut his mouth on anything (the famous Playboy interview) when it needed to be shut. The things he says today are exactly the same level of goofiness that they were in the ’70’s. To think we booted Ford for him?!@#$?
Writing this comment on 12 October is somewhat poignant. Nine years ago today, President Clinton ignored the warnings from his own Commanders on the ground about Al Qaeda and it’s ambitions. The USS Cole was the result (little known to the public is this followed a failed attempt on the USS The Sullivans on 3 January 2000).
I entered the Navy during the second year of Reagan’s tenure, and one of his first acts was the largest pay and allowance hike in military history. The 600-ship Navy he commissioned helped end the Cold War and bring down the Iron Curtain (and Berlin Wall). During my first years, it was not uncommon to face disdain in public when travelling in uniform – coming on the heels of Carter’s term and the decade-old end to the Vietnam War. By the end of Reagan’s first term – flags again flew from front porches, the veteran paid the respect due, and all-in-all there was a pride in the country I’d never seen before.
My father – himself a World War II vet – once told me the biggest mistake he ever made was voting for Carter (the first time).
As for the Nobel Peace Prize? I believe it symptomatic of the utter disdain our so-called allies (particularly in Europe) hold us in. They’re happy when we come to their rescue, but envious of our standard of living and brash bravado. They see Obama as the next Kennedy – a uniter and song-singer with the eloquence to mend fences and build a Neville Chamberlain-style pacifist nation of non-engagement. Makes me and my salty Sailor bones want to puke.

I’ve spent quite a bit of time in Afghanistan and Iraq as an Army infantry officer, and I don’t believe there’s any difference between Al Qaida and the Taliban except for the language they speak, so I am appalled that our liberal politicians are considering making nice with the Taliban and classifying them as a possible legitimate form of government so that they can focus solely on Al Qaida. They’re the same thing! The Taliban makes the Columbian Drug Cartel look like the Peace Corps! Please, people. Please!
Stick to Real Estate but since you are on the topic…Carter is everyone’s favorite whipping boy (me included as a staunch Republican) but if we’d just kept on the path he set for energy/fuel efficiency standards, we wouldn’t need any damn oil from the Middle East. Does anyone in their right mind really think we give a hoot about the Middle East for any reason other than oil? There’s bad actors in every corner of the planet so don’t give me the “we need to bring democracy everywhere” BS. That’s what the oil companies want you to think so they can have taxpayer provided security guards (aka military).
I’m no leftie (was prez of College Republicans, use to proudly call myself a GOPer until Bush became a big gov’t bozo), brother just returned from Afghanistan, etc. but we need to get our head out of our ass on the Middle East. Bush gave Obama a stinkpot and Obama will probably make it worse.
Now let’s get back to Real Estate puuuhhhllllease

I feel sorry for anyone that doesn’t get the connection between consumer confidence and stability at home and abroad. In a time when unemployment is at 10%, more job losses are coming, as well as a possible increase in the taxes we as self-employed individuals pay who do earn less than $250k a year who typically lack or pay through the nose on healthcare- there is no possible way we’re going to ignore the obvious and sit on the sidelines. Our business hinges on the health of the country either way, and these are unusual times worthy of discussion.
If you’re not into Sunday commentary, and wish to bury your head in the sand, then I completely support your right to do so.

So he went, you didn’t. Perhaps you’re too young. It seems so from your post. You’re obviously not THAT Mike Gallagher from talk radio. Anyway, if you HAD gone – the Gulf or A**crackistan, you would probaby have a different opinion. As Aaron said – Taliban = Al Qaeda. I’d rather kill them over there instead of cleaning up blood over here. I agree Bush certainly did not have a coherent exit strategy for Iraq – but a mess? You ever ask an Afghan woman, teacher, or professor that question? Not one attack on our soil since 9/11. And I don’t believe there’s much oil under the poppy fields….
Ditto what Benn said – don’t come on Sunday if you don’t like the food.
As someone who’s been there, done that (with ya Aaron!) I am ectstatic we now have a another contributor who can be both hilarious (did you watch last week’s post?) and controversial. Oh, and he seems to share a lot of my political leanings
