Look for Networking Opportunities
Networking happens in many different situations. Not only should you network with other people in the same line of business as yourself, but more importantly, reach out to those outside of your circle, to build the relationships and make connections. Any gathering of people – put your networking skills to work!
Networking comes very naturally to me. As an Air Force brat who moved often, if I wanted to have friends and connect with people – I needed to reach out. I attended a Spark! Networking event in Philadelphia to support my friend Gloria Bell who was speaking on Networking 201. It was a very informative session and I realized by the audience reactions – that networking is hard for some people.
Networking Stepped Up
If you’re past the Networking Tips of “Don’t be shy”, “Make sure you dress with confidence”, “Meet five people” you might be ready to step it up a bit.
- Here are some of my favorites that were shared along with a couple of my own:
- Do ask thought-provoking questions that won’t have a yes/no response.
- Do have an elevator pitch about yourself.
- Don’t try to sell your product or service when networking.
- Don’t just throw your business card at someone when you meet. Talk and engage first.
- Don’t be touchy. Don’t invade the personal space and step in too close.
- Do make sure your business cards are easy to reach, along with a pen.
- Do eat only take food able to be eaten as quick bites.
- Do keep your right hand free of drinks/plates/papers – so you can ‘shake’.

Kim you are a master at networking, online and off line. Good tips about eating small bites. Nothing like trying to say hello with a mouth full. LOL

Oooh, the keeping right hand free is a good one- nothing worse than shaking a freezing cold hand that was clasping a beer!
You and Gloria are so darling! What y’all may not realize is that you’re naturally approachable- you both keep a smile on your face but more importantly your eyebrows are always raised indicating you’re interested in your surroundings… most people keep level eyebrows or even furrowed brows making them more difficult to approach (imo). SO I would add that people should mind their body language and facial expressions to allow conversation flow freely.
